Empowering Youth Through Sports Across Europe

The EU SportIncludes project is on a mission to transform the lives of children and teens with autism, ADHD, and OCD through inclusive sports programs. By creating a network of dedicated partners across Europe, we are building opportunities for young people with special needs to participate in sports and develop key life skills. Through education, training, and collaboration, the project aims to break down barriers, promote physical and mental well-being, and foster a more inclusive society.

In this first edition of our digital magazine, we are excited to introduce you to the project, our partners, and the early results of our collective efforts. Project Overview

Breaking Barriers Through Sports

The EU SportIncludes project is a collaborative initiative aimed at creating inclusive sports programs for children and teens with autism, ADHD, and OCD. Co-founded by the Erasmus+ Program, the project brings together organisations from across Europe, each contributing its unique expertise to design and implement sports activities that cater to the needs of these vulnerable groups.

At the heart of EU SportIncludes is the belief that sports can be a powerful tool for fostering personal growth, social inclusion, and mental well-being. The project focuses on equipping educators, coaches, and trainers with the knowledge and skills they need to engage youth with special needs in meaningful, enjoyable, and physically active experiences. Through carefully tailored programs, we aim to help these young people develop physical coordination, build social connections, and boost their confidence both on and off the field.

Our Key Objectives:

  • Inclusive Participation: Ensure that children and teens with autism, ADHD, and OCD have access to sports programs that are designed to meet their unique needs.

  • Education and Training: Provide specialised training for sports educators and trainers, empowering them to deliver inclusive, adaptive sports activities.

  • Community Engagement: Foster cooperation between local, national, and international organisations to build a supportive network that promotes inclusion and diversity in sports.

A European Perspective

With partners from Spain and Italy, EU SportIncludes adopts a transnational approach, combining the best practices from across Europe to develop a comprehensive methodology for inclusive sports. By sharing knowledge and expertise, the project aims to create scalable solutions that can be implemented across different countries and contexts.

Our Partners

The EU SportIncludes project is driven by the collaboration between two key partners, each bringing their specialised knowledge and experience to the table. Together, SportIndoor and Open Europe are spearheading the effort to create inclusive sports programs for youth with autism, ADHD, and OCD.

SportIndoor (Italy)

As the lead coordinator, SportIndoor takes charge of the overall project management and execution. With their state-of-the-art sports facilities and extensive experience in adaptive sports, SportIndoor plays a pivotal role in developing and piloting the inclusive sports programs. Based in Italy, they are responsible for organising the training sessions and workshops, as well as implementing the pilot programs that will serve as the foundation for the project’s long-term goals.

With a strong focus on physical well-being, SportIndoor has a history of working with youth with special needs, adapting sports like swimming, golf, and gym classes to help them develop crucial physical and social skills. Their commitment to promoting health through sports makes them the perfect leader for this initiative.

Open Europe (Spain)

Open Europe plays a critical role in the coordination of the project’s educational and outreach components. Based in Spain, Open Europe brings its expertise in education, training, and international collaboration to the project, helping to design the curriculum and training materials for coaches and educators involved in the program.

Their experience in organising European mobility projects and creating inclusive educational environments allows Open Europe to lead the project’s efforts in building a network of professionals skilled in inclusive sports. They ensure that the project remains focused on fostering collaboration across borders, while also engaging local communities in Spain and Italy.

The First Face-to-Face Meeting in Mozzo

Laying the Groundwork for EU SportIncludes

In the early stages of the EU SportIncludes project, the partners from Open Europe and SportIndoor gathered for the first in-person meeting in Mozzo, Italy, marking an important milestone in the development of this innovative initiative. The meeting was hosted at the SportIndoor facilities, where the teams worked together to discuss the project’s goals, strategies, and next steps for creating inclusive sports programs for youth with autism, ADHD, and OCD.

Collaborating in Person

This face-to-face meeting allowed the two coordinating partners to align on key aspects of the project and lay the foundation for future activities. Discussions focused on how to structure the upcoming workshops and training programs that will be rolled out across Spain and Italy. The teams shared insights and exchanged ideas on how best to adapt sports activities for children with special needs, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Exploring SportIndoor's Facilities

As part of the visit, Open Europe had the opportunity to tour SportIndoor’s state-of-the-art facilities, which will play a crucial role in piloting the inclusive sports programs. The tour included live demonstrations of various sports activities, showcasing the potential for adaptation:

  • Swimming Lessons: Trainers at SportIndoor demonstrated how their tailored swimming programs can help children with autism and ADHD improve coordination and confidence in the water.
  • Golf Lessons: The partners observed golf sessions designed to enhance focus and motor skills, demonstrating how sports like golf can be adapted to meet the unique needs of participants.
  • Gym Class: A gym session highlighted exercises that promote physical well-being and help children manage their energy levels, crucial for those with ADHD and similar conditions.

Strengthening the Partnership

This meeting was a pivotal step in strengthening the collaboration between SportIndoor and Open Europe. By visiting the facilities and witnessing the inclusive sports programs firsthand, the partners were able to identify key areas for development and set the stage for the next phases of the project.

The first in-person meeting in Mozzo was not only a chance to connect but also to experience the real-world application of inclusive sports programs, setting a strong foundation for the future success of EU SportIncludes.

Early Results and Impact

Laying the Foundation for Inclusive Sports Success

As the EU SportIncludes project continues to take shape, the initial stages have already produced significant groundwork that will pave the way for future success. While the project is still in development, early activities—such as the first face-to-face meeting in Mozzo—have highlighted the potential for impactful change in the way sports are delivered to youth with special needs.

Strengthened Collaboration

The first in-person meeting in Mozzo helped establish a strong, cohesive partnership between Open Europe and SportIndoor, ensuring that both organisations are aligned in their vision for the project. This partnership forms the backbone of the project’s future activities, ensuring a unified approach to inclusive sports programs across Europe.

Insight into Practical Implementation

The live demonstrations of swimming, golf, and gym sessions provided both partners with valuable insights into how sports activities can be adapted for youth with autism, ADHD, and OCD. These observations will be crucial in designing tailored training programs for coaches and educators in the coming months.

Facility Readiness: SportIndoor's

Facility Readiness: SportIndoor’s facilities in Italy have been confirmed as ideal venues for piloting the inclusive sports programs. The variety of sports on offer and the adaptable infrastructure provide a strong foundation for running workshops, training sessions, and pilot activities that focus on inclusivity.

Anticipated Impact

Although the project is still in its early phases, EU SportIncludes is poised to make a substantial impact. By fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of inclusive sports, the project aims to:

  • Improve the physical and emotional well-being of children and teens with special needs by engaging them in adaptive sports programs.
  • Build the capacity of educators and coaches to work effectively with young people who face barriers to participation in traditional sports activities.
  • Create a replicable model for inclusive sports that can be shared and implemented across Europe, promoting a more equitable approach to physical education.

Looking Ahead: Future Plans

What’s Next for EU SportIncludes?

As the EU SportIncludes project progresses, the upcoming phases are set to deepen the impact of our work and expand the reach of inclusive sports programs for children and teens with autism, ADHD, and OCD. With a strong foundation in place following the first in-person meeting and facility explorations, we are excited to move forward with the next key milestones.

Upcoming Workshops and Training Sessions

One of the next major steps is the Training of Trainers workshops, where educators and sports coaches will be equipped with the necessary skills to implement adaptive sports activities. These workshops will provide hands-on learning experiences focused on understanding the specific needs of children with autism, ADHD, and OCD and how to tailor sports programs for their full participation. We aim to roll out these training sessions in both Italy and Spain in the coming months.

Pilot Sports Programs

Following the training sessions, pilot sports programs will be launched in both countries. These programs will offer real-world applications of iinclusive sports methodologies, giving young participants the opportunity to engage in activities like swimming, golf, and gym sessions. The pilots will serve as a testing ground for refining the program, ensuring that it is adaptable, scalable, and impactful.

Long-Term Vision

Looking ahead, the project envisions creating a ripple effect across Europe by sharing our inclusive sports model with other countries and organisations. Through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and ongoing engagement, we aim to foster a new era of sports programs that prioritise inclusion and diversity. EU SportIncludes seeks to not only make a difference for individual children but to influence the way sports are structured and delivered at a broader societal level.
